It`s been re-found!
Bird`s-nest orchid has been found again close to an old record location not far from Woburn in the Aspley wood area by Steve Oakes-Monger who deservedly will get his free copy of "The Wild Orchids of Bedfordshire".Well done Steve.
What this does mean is BNO`s are now out so please have a look for them. Below is the table of records..they could still be in any of these areas...but Kings wood Heath and Reach (1981),
Dungee wood and Odell Plantation (1993), Odell Great wood (2001) are the most recent.
BNO`s lack chlorophyll and are pale brown, and as they can grow without the need for sunlight can occur in deep shade with little ground flora. However the woburn plant was growing in a fairly light position with grasses and little leaf litter...so look out for them anywhere in ancient woodland in a range of soils.
